An EV charger installation quote in Nottingham should cover the charger unit, a new dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, the cable run out to where you park, the earthing arrangement, testing, certification and notification under the Building Regulations. Where a quote comes back higher, it is almost always one of five specific things — and an installer should be able to name which before any work starts. A home chargepoint is a fixed appliance wired onto its own circuit, not something you plug in. Most of what you pay for is the electrical work behind the unit on the wall. EV charging installations are covered by Section 722 of BS 7671, the national wiring standard, and the work is for a qualified, registered electrician. What is included in an EV charger installation quote in Nottingham? Somo's price for a standard home installation is £850 to £950. That is our own figure rather than a national average, and it is not a quote — the only way to know your number is for somebody to look at where the board is and where you park. At that price a standard installation covers: • The charger unit — a 7kW wall-mounted smart charger, tethered or untethered. • A dedicated circuit from your consumer unit with its own protective device. An EV charger cannot share a circuit. • The cable run to the charger position, within a standard allowance of roughly 10 metres. • The earthing arrangement made safe for a chargepoint — a specific requirement for EV installations, not the same as for an ordinary socket. • Mounting, testing and commissioning , including the charger's smart functions and app. • Certification and notification — an Electrical Installation Certificate, and notification of the new circuit under Part P of the Building Regulations. That price assumes a consumer unit in sound condition with room for another circuit, a cable run under about 10 metres, no digging, and a single-phase supply with capacity to spare. Those four assumptions are where the variation lives. What pushes an EV charger quote above £950? Five things account for nearly all of the spread between two honest quotes. The figures below are published UK guide ranges for 2026 except where marked as Somo's own price, so you can see whether an extra on your quote sits in the normal range. Load management — where the charger reduces its draw when the house is using a lot — will frequently solve a marginal supply without any work by the network operator, and a charger with open-PEN protection built into the unit is usually cheaper than a separate earth electrode. Why is my EV charger quote higher than my neighbour's? Two houses on the same street in Gedling can legitimately differ by several hundred pounds, and it is rarely the charger model. Usually it is geometry — one board sits in the hall three metres from the drive, the other in a back kitchen with the parking at the end of a garden — and after that the state of the existing installation, since an old, unlabelled or already-full board has to be dealt with first. Both are real costs rather than upsells, and a survey before quoting is what stops the number moving on the day. What does a cheap EV charger quote usually leave out? Headline prices below £800 are common online and are not always wrong — but they are usually a starting point rather than a finished number. Commonly added afterwards: • Cable beyond a short included allowance , sometimes as little as 5 metres, charged per metre after that. • Anything to do with the consumer unit , where the headline assumes a spare way ready to use. • The earthing arrangement , quoted as an extra once the supply type has been seen. • Groundworks , almost never included in a headline figure. • Making good — plaster, brickwork and decoration where a cable has passed through. Ask any quote to state the included cable length, whether the consumer unit has been assessed, and what happens to the price if the earthing needs work. A quote answering those three in writing can be compared with another. One that does not is a number without a scope. Who is allowed to install an EV charger? An EV chargepoint installation adds a new dedicated circuit, which is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. It must be carried out by a qualified electrician, and it has to be either notified through building control or self-certified by an installer registered with a government-approved scheme such as NAPIT. Somo Electrical is NAPIT-registered, number 33320, which can be checked on the NAPIT register at search.napit.org.uk. This is not work to attempt or to have done informally. Beyond the safety of a high, continuous load on a domestic circuit, an uncertified installation can cause problems with insurance and at the point of sale. If you are unsure whether an existing charger was certified, ask for the certificate rather than investigating the installation yourself. Does the government grant change what I pay? Possibly, but only for some households, and not through us. The remaining chargepoint grants are aimed at renters, flat owner-occupiers, households without off-street parking, landlords and businesses rather than owner-occupiers with a driveway, and they are administered through installers approved by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. Frequently asked questions How long does an EV charger installation take? About three to four hours for a straightforward home installation, with the power off for part of that while the new circuit is connected. A consumer unit replacement, a long cable run or any digging takes it to a full day or occasionally two. The charger is tested, commissioned and set up on its app before the electrician leaves. Can I get an EV charger if I rent or live in a flat? Often yes, but there is a consent step before the electrical one. A tenant needs the landlord's permission, and a leaseholder usually needs freeholder or management company consent under the lease, particularly where the cable or parking space crosses communal land. Get it in writing first — it determines where the charger can physically go. Do I need a 7kW or a 22kW charger at home? 7kW suits almost every home. A 22kW charger needs a three-phase supply, which most Nottingham houses do not have. A 7kW unit adds roughly 25 to 30 miles of range an hour, which fills most cars overnight comfortably. Check what your car accepts too — many will not draw more than 7kW on AC anyway. Will my existing electricity supply take an EV charger? Usually. Most Nottingham homes have a 60A, 80A or 100A single-phase supply and a 7kW charger draws 32A. Whether it fits depends on what else runs at peak — an electric shower and hob together make it tighter.
